The massive Andromeda Galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to our own, approximately 2.5 million LY away. It contains in the region of 1 trillion stars. The light took at least 2.5 million years to reach my camera.
Andromeda and the Milky Way are part of a group of about 45 galaxies making a small cluster. The largest is Andromeda followed by the Milky Way. Andromeda has an estimated one trillion stars and a diameter of over 200,000 LY. This makes it more than double the size of our own galaxy. In this image, there are two other galaxies, the two blobs we see, ‘friends’. These are gravitationally linked to Andromeda. The larger one of these satellite galaxies is Messier 110 and the smaller one Messier 32.
