The Southern Ring
NGC 3132 is a planetary nebula located in the southern constellation Vela, approximately 2,000 light-years away from Earth. It is also known as the Eight-Burst Nebula or the Southern Ring Nebula due to its distinctive shape, resembling a colourful ring with several loops.
The nebula was formed when a star, similar in size to our Sun, ran out of fuel and started to collapse under its own gravity. As it did so, the outer layers of the star were expelled into space, creating the planetary nebula we see today. The central star, which is still visible at the centre of the nebula, is now a white dwarf, a highly compressed remnant of the original star.
